The AMI Montessori 12–18 Orientation provides foundational Montessori theory and principles for supporting adolescent development (12-18 years). Lecture topics focus on the central principles of Montessori, the needs and characteristics of the adolescent, and the key principles that support Study and Work for this stage of human development, including the prepared environment, the role of the adult, and the importance of experiencing social and economic independence.
Dates, Requirements & Fees:
This online course introduces communities, schools, teachers, administrators, parents, and support personnel to the developmental background and frameworks that support adolescents from 12- 18 years guided by Montessori principles. Led by Gena Engelfried, AMI 12-18 Trainer and long-time practitioner, this workshop will cover topics such as General Montessori Principles, the Needs and Characteristics of Adolescents, the Prepared Environment and Role of the Adult during Adolescence, and the importance of Self-Expression and participation in Production and Exchange. The course is lecture-based, but will include discussions, seminars, and observations.

Tuesday evenings 7:00 - 9:00 pm EST (January 12, 19, 26, February 2, 6, 9)
Earns an AMI Certificate of Completion
Certificate Requirements:
90% attendance
2 hours of observation of adolescents in general – either immediately after or parallel to the course. Specific topics to focus on will be given for observation.
One 1-2 page reflection on observations due February 26, 2027.
One 1-2 page reflection on “Appendix A and Appendix B” in Maria Montessori’s From Childhood to Adolescence due during the course
Required Hours: 18 hours of synchronous lectures, discussions, and seminars plus 5 hours of asynchronous work

Trainer
Gena Engelfried (she/her) is a 12-18 Auxiliary Trainer who holds an AMI Primary Diploma and an AMI 12-18 Diploma. She was a 3-6 guide for 11 years and an Adolescent Guide and School Principal at The Grove School in Redlands, CA for many years. She holds a Bachelors in History and Creative Writing and a Master of Arts in Education from the University of Redlands and a Parent Education Certificate from the University of California, Los Angeles. She has worked as a faculty member on 12-18 diploma courses for both Train Montessori and IMTI. Gena lives with her husband in rural Southwest Virginia near her family’s farm.
